Saint Luke Baptist Church was organized over fifty-five years ago in the
community known as Green Pastures. Six people were instrumental in organizing the church,
namely, Susie Carpenter, Winnie Comas, James & Leah Dozier, Alex Alexander and Jessie
Jones. The Churchs original name was Rose Hill Baptist Church. The original property
was sold and a new site was purchased near the homes of the members in Green Pastures. The
name of the church was changed to Saint Luke Baptist Church. A one room frame building was
purchased and moved to the site at 10037 Northeast 50th . This building had no
modern facilities, however, God provided a means for the membership to remodel the frame
building into a block structure. This improved the look and value of the building.
The late Rev. Samuel Nunley was called as the first Pastor.
Following him were Rev. Logan and Rev. Ransom Leonard. The late Rev. James Dozier served
as interim Pastor before Rev. Willie Nash was called to Pastor. Rev. Nash is the oldest
living previous Pastor of the Saint Luke Baptist Church. In August of 1962, Rev. Dewitt
Roland, then Pastor of the Saint Paul Baptist Church in Meridian, Oklahoma was called as
Pastor.
In July of 1966, a remodeling program at a cost of
$11,260.00 was initiatied providing the much needed indoor restrooms, classrooms and a
baptistery. In April of 1973 a new sanctuary at a cost of $46,000. was constructed to
accommodate church growth. More ministries were added such as: Mobile Meal Ministry,
Northeast Concerned Christians Housing Ministry, Bus Ministry, Evangelism Ministry and
Prison Ministry. In 1981-1982 additional property was purchased and the present church
building was completed at a cost of $300,000. In August of 1991 the Dr. Dewitt Roland
Fellowship Hall and two education wings were added at a cost of $700,000.
After thirty-three years of effective pastoral ministry,
Pastor Roland retired due to failing health. On August 28, 1992 Pastor Roland recommended
Rev. Kenneth L. West as Pastor of the Saint Luke Baptist Church. Rev. West was serving as
an Assistant Pastor. Rev. West accepted the call as Pastor and installation services were
held October 18, 1992 at 3:00 P. M. The church also voted to bestow the title "Pastor
Emeritus" to Pastor Roland. On December 9, 1992, Pastor Roland was called home from
labor to reward. Pastor Roland served the Saint Luke Baptist Church faithfully and
untiring for thirty years. During his pastorate God blessed the church to grow physically,
numerically and spiritually.
Pastor Kenneth L. West, his wife, Sharron and five children
became members of the Saint Luke Baptist Church on April 17, 1990. Pastor West has been
faithful in leading the church in the service of the Lord. The Saint Luke Baptist Church
has continued to thrive in many ministries under the leadership of Pastor West. Ministries
such as the: Marriage Seminars, Childrens Church, and Deacons Training Ministry.
On October 13th 2002 the Saint Luke Baptist
Church Family celebrated the 10TH Appreciation Service for Pastor West and his
wife Sharron, the Lord honored and blessed the fellowship with an outstanding event.
